Dr. Botond Szűcs, Head Biologist at PHARMAFLIGHT, has received a huge professional recognition by being elected as an affiliate member of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine (IAASM).
We asked Dr Szűcs about the prestigious organisation and its work.
- The IAASM was founded in 1955 with the aim of researching new knowledge and compiling knowledge at international level for the benefit of aviation safety. The organisation has 275 permanent or, if you like, regular members, consisting exclusively of natural persons, which for the first five years means only invited or affiliate membership. During this period, the recruited researcher works with a mentor in the research area for which he/she was recruited. My mentor was previously in the US Navy in a teaching role, but for me he supports my work in the field of physiological research. Due to the nature of IAASM, these research areas to improve aviation safety can be technical engineering, technology or physiology. As full membership requires increasingly high quality technical material to be brought to the table, it is fair to say that the work carried out here represents the pinnacle of the profession. This is why its permanent members tend to be consultants to public organisations.
The IAASM Council meets monthly and conferences are held annually for the entire membership. These will take place this autumn in Lisbon and next year in Singapore.
